This month's speaker is Hans Andersen, team leader for the Vegetation Monitoring and Remote Sensing team within the USDA Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station. He will present on the inventory work underway in interior Alaska using remote sensing and other geospatial technologies.

Because Alaska boasts such a diversity of forest types and management issues, for the 2021 AK SAF Annual Meeting, you will be taken on a virtual tour around the state. Each day, a different chaper will host a presentation that features forestry issues relevant to their area.
Each day will start with a brief introduction followed by one or two speakers, ending with time for questions and discussion. Each presentation is scheduled for 12:00-1:30 p.m. (ADT).

Bob Larimore will give a presentation on changes to forest management in the southeast United States on military installations over the past 50 years. From the military hiring its first professional forester to the change in wildland fire management to how forest products were and are now managed all in the best interest of supporting the military mission and protecting the publics natural resources.

The Yukon River Chapter is hosting a virtual technical presentation, "Update on Interior Alaska's Forest Inventory and Analysis program." Miho Welton, FIA Coordinator, manages the interior Alaska FIA program and will provide an update to the status of FIA efforts over the past 5 years. Alaska DNR has partnered up with the USFS on establishing the interior Alaska forest inventory program now in its 6th year.
Juneau Chapter Meeting Barnacle: Coast to Kitchen

Lia Heifetz, a local kelp farmer and cofounder of Barnacle Foods, will discuss the science of kelp farming. Kelp farming is a low input, sustainable, natural form of aquaculture with a huge range of existing and potential products. It is an emerging and growing industry in the coastal Pacific Northwest and has many parallels with forestry from a natural resource management standpoint.
This meeting has been approved for 0.50 credits.
