In Oregon, forest landowners have helped craft a proposal that would significantly boost the heavy-hitting supplemental resources—primarily contracted air tankers and helicopters—available to move around the state on short notice to places with the most severe fire danger.
Vernonia joins forestry ed trend
Why would a small Oregon town start a high school forestry class?
Ask the leaders of the 600-student Vernonia School District in the northwest Coast Range. They've not only launched the class, but made it part of a comprehensive K-12 natural resources curriculum that focuses on forestry.
Over 250 forestry professionals and students gathered in Portland on May 11-13 for the 2011 Oregon/Washington State Society of American Foresters Joint Conference. Oregon and Washington SAF members include nearly 1,700 field foresters, researchers, administrators and educators who help study and manage the 51.5 million acres of public and private forests throughout the two states.
For both the Oregon and Washington State Societies, now is the time to submit nominations for state-level SAF awards. The due date for award nominations for both states is March 15th.
