Alaska SAF Speaker Series: Ensuring Healthy and Productive Alaskan Forests in the Face of Climate Change

February 7, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AKST

This year Alaska SAF is launching a brand-new speaker series. This month’s presenter is Dr. Brad St. Clair, a research geneticist with the Genetic and Silvicultural Foundations for Management Team of the USDA Forest Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station in Corvallis, Oregon.

Climates are getting warmer, much more so in Alaska than further south. We know from genetic studies that plants are adapted to their local climates. As climates change, however, they will become increasingly maladapted, leading to decreases in health and productivity of forest stands.

Resource managers may respond to concerns of climate change through silvicultural and genetic management. One of the most important management options is selection of species and populations that may be expected to be adapted to future climates, also called assisted migration. Assisted migration is discussed along with web-based tools to help direct managers to select seed sources matched to the future climate of their reforestation or restoration site.

CFEs will be available.
