Alaska SAF Speaker Series: NASA Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment Applications in the Tanana Valley State Forest

January 24, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm PST

The Alaska SAF Speaker series returned for 2023 and the first presentation features a discussion on research project underway on the Tanana Valley State Forest. Shelby Sundquist uses a forest model to explore future climate and management impacts on the Alaskan boreal forest. She is especially interested in the recent intensification of drought, insect outbreaks, and fire. Forest models may explain and predict change when experiments would be prohibitively large. The University of Virginia Forest Model Enhanced (UVAFME) is a model for the Alaskan boreal forest that scales dynamics from individual trees up to landscapes. This presentation will describe implementations of pests, fire, climate change, and management in UVAFME.

Shelby is a PhD student at Northern Arizona University.  She also holds a MA in environmental remote sensing and GIS and BA in environmental policy and analysis from Boston University.
