Northwest Oregon is home to arguably the foundation of modern forestry in Oregon – caste by the Tillamook Burn and forged in the aftermath by foresters and citizens of Oregon that struggled to prevent the destructive fire cycle and replant the Burn. Northwest Oregon is also incredibly diverse – ranging west to east from the magnificent and productive coast range forests to the beautiful and structurally diverse forests of the western Cascades. Nestled between these forests is Oregon’s largest metropolitan area with its unquenchable desire for the use of, and products from these surrounding forests. This is the backdrop for this year’s Oregon SAF annual meeting on April 26-28 at Washington Square’s Embassy Suites Hotel – co-hosted by members of Portland and Tillamook-Clatsop Chapters.
Foresters: Connecting Forests, Products, People kicks off with a plenary session that is highlighted by a keynote address from Oregon’s own Clark Seely, SAF’s immediate past-president. The session includes presentations surrounding our major themes: wood products, wildlife, research, and public perception of forestry. The day’s activities conclude with an icebreaker, giving you an opportunity to network with fellow professionals and visit with the meeting’s vendors. New during the icebreaker will be a student/mentor social.
Day two starts with the traditional Alumni Breakfast, followed by concurrent sessions. All presentations are scheduled on the half-hour, allowing attendees to bounce between sessions throughout the day. During the morning, session #1 is titled Communication/Leadership – showcasing several powerful presentations on the topic and highlighted by a presentation summarizing SAF’s implementation of the North American Forest Partnership by Matt Menashes, our CEO of SAF. Session #2 explores Forest Management and features a variety of forest management-related presentations.
After a lunch break, session #3 focuses on Timber Harvesting and includes an introduction into tethered logging and other relevant topics. Concurrent session #4 is titled Technology and covers a host of topics including FIA, drones, remote sensors, Phodar, FVS, and new GPS technology. The day concludes with OSAF’s traditional Awards Banquet, where we honor the contributions of our peers to the Society.
Friday begins with the Pep-up Breakfast, followed by OSAF’s business meeting where OSAF leaders highlight current activities and accomplishments of state SAF leadership. At 9:00 am members adjourn to one of three outstanding field tours: Horning Seed Orchard and Hopkins Demonstration Forest; Tillamook State Forest Revisited; or Portland, City of Wood. The first tour takes you east into the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the second west to the coastal forests, and the third focusing on innovative wood technology including cross-laminated buildings in the City of Portland.

Field Tours – Dave Wells, Chair
Three field tours are planned. They will be first come first seated, with a bus going to each of the three locations. Sign-up early to assure a spot on the tour of your choice – and indicate a second choice during registration in the event your preferred tour has been fully booked. All three tours will depart Embassy Suites at 9:00 a.m. and return at 4:00 p.m.
- Horning Seed Orchard and Hopkins Demonstration Forest
Tour the BLM Horning Seed Orchard near Colton. In operation since 1964, Horning provides genetically tested and improved seed sources for Douglas-fir, noble fir, western hemlock, and western redcedar. Ongoing tree breeding programs produce seed to ensure progeny is genetically diverse and well adapted for reforesting sites in Western Oregon. Participants will see work in progress including controlled pollination to develop faster growing Douglas-fir trees (in height and diameter) and healthier, more disease-resistant western white pine, and sugar pine.
Tour Hopkins Demonstration Forest, 140 acres of working nonindustrial private woodlands with the mission to promote science-based education to enhance understanding of and appreciation for the complexities and benefits of woodland management. Hopkins features the variety of non-industrial woodland management practices, demonstrating both evenaged and unevenaged silviculture at various stages in the management cycle. Participants will also see Oregon’s new Future Natural Resource Leaders organization in action: High school forestry programs from across Oregon will be at Hopkins for their annual state convention during our visit.
- Tillamook State Forest Revisited
Seventy years after planting of “The Burn,” see how the Tillamook State Forest has grown. Take a walk through the forest, visit a recreation site and adjacent timber harvest, and view old railroad trestle remnants and new forest management techniques. Cap off the day with a visit to the acclaimed Tillamook Forest Center.
- Portland, City of Wood
Cross laminated timbers are on display at the Building Museum in Washington, DC, and are now shaping Portland’s skyline. Join Timm Locke of Oregon Forest Resources Institute to see how this relatively new building material is being used to create multi-story buildings with some unique properties. Building is a dynamic process and Timm may adjust the route to see the best examples of ongoing construction and use of this material.

Professional ($340 early-bird) and student ($210) registration fees include attendance at all meeting sessions, refreshments, icebreaker, both breakfasts, Thursday lunch and awards banquet, and one of the three tours (all tours include transportation, lunch, and beverages).
The early-bird deadline is April 14. After this date, an additional fee is assessed. Purchase orders, VISA/MasterCard/American Express are accepted. Checks should be made payable to 2017 OSAF Meeting. Tax ID #23-7065108.
Cancellations
Cancellations received by April 14 are subject to a 15% service charge. Cancellations after April 14 will be charged the entire registration fee, but substitutions are always welcome.
Field Trips
Transportation, lunch, and refreshments are provided for all field trips. Technical field trips will require some walking on uneven terrain. Wear appropriate closed-toe shoes or boots, and bring a jacket and consider rain gear if weather dictates. Tour availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up early to assure a spot on the tour of your choice!
Sponsoring organizations will receive special recognition during the meeting and on the printed meeting program. There are four levels of sponsorship listed below with the accompanying benefits.
- Platinum sponsor — $1,000 & up: two registrations, meal sponsor, placement on the conference banner, and recognition in the program with organization/company logo
- Gold sponsor — $500-$999: one registration, meal sponsor, placement on the conference banner, and recognition in the program brochure with organization/company logo
- Silver sponsor — $100-$499: speaker sponsor, recognition in the program brochure with organization/company logo
- Bronze sponsor — <$100: recognition in the program brochure with organization/company logo
If your organization would like to be a vendor, please contact Bill Lecture. Cost to exhibit is $400 ($425 after April 14) and includes vendor booth, meeting attendance, icebreaker, breaks, Thursday breakfast, and Thursday lunch. Banquet and field tour are sold separately.
A block of rooms for the annual meeting has been reserved at the Embassy Suites Hotel – please contact them at 503-644-4000 to make your reservation(s) directly and refer to Oregon Society of American Foresters. The room rates are $149 plus tax, which includes complimentary breakfast. Reservations need to be made prior to March 25, 2017 to secure the annual meeting rate.
By attending the annual meeting, participants will be eligible for up to 9.5 Category 1 CFE credits for the general meeting portion. SAF CFE credits for the tours will vary.
New this year for OSAF! Please join us at the beginning of the icebreaker social for the student/mentor social. Cost is free and it’s a great opportunity to network with the next generation of forestry professionals. Also, there’s a rumor that beer will be provided for the mentors! If you’re willing to be a mentor and will attend the social, please indicate such when registering.
Annual meeting organizers are SEEKING DONATIONS for the Foresters’ Fund and OSAF Special Projects’ Fund raffle. Any contributions are greatly appreciated. These funds provide monetary grants to SAF units for projects that promote forestry education and enhance public understanding of the forestry profession. In addition to the ticket raffle, there will also be a silent auction. Your donation of items such as artwork, forestry tools, books, hand crafted items, specialty foods, gift baskets, lodging packages, and more will help support these important programs.
