The Mill Casino Hotel and RV Park on Coos Bay
The southwest corner of Oregon is a very unique area, home to Oregon myrtlewood and featuring a working port with log export yards and chip export terminals. Our forests are threatened by insects, fire, and sudden oak death syndrome. Come explore Oregon’s Bay Area and have a good time. Join the Coos and Siskiyou Chapters at the 2016 Oregon Society of American Foresters’ (OSAF) annual meeting on April 27-29 at the Mill Casino Hotel and RV Park in Coos Bay.
Water * Trees * Transportation kicks off with a welcome from the Coquille Indian Tribe and Conference Chair Shaun Harkins. The first day’s focus will be panel discussions on proposed riparian rule changes, watershed science and management, forest health issues (including an update on sudden oak death), and forestry logistics. The evening will feature an icebreaker and poster session.
The second day begins with the alumni breakfast, followed by our OSAF business meeting. We will be treated to presentations from Clark Seely, national SAF president, and Ed Shepard, our District 2 SAF Board representative. The morning presentations will cover trucking logistics and education projects of the Coos Chapter. The afternoon will offer your choice of two outstanding technical field trips: forestry logistics on the southwest coast including marine and rail transportation, or intensive forest health and water management work on Campbell Global-Menasha property. The day concludes with the OSAF Awards Banquet, followed by dancing to a live band.
The third day features the annual Pep-Up Breakfast led by our student members, followed by presentations on forestry education in Oregon and density management across geography and ownerships. Stay for the afternoon and be treated to lunch and a barge tour of Coos Bay and the historic McCullough Bridge. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and yes, we will be touring on the water, so don’t forget your camera!

Forestry Logistics – Marine and Rail Transportation
- K2 Exports, LLC: Get a ground-level view of the log export process and hear about the partnership between CEDCO, the Economic Development Corporation of the Coquille Indian Tribe, and Knutson Towboat Company, a 100-year-old locally owned business.
- Southport Lumber Co.: Visit the mill and receive an overview of log processing, exports, and rail transportation.
- Roseburg Forest Products Co.: Tour a chip export facility and hear about the export process and markets for chips.
Forest Health and Watershed Management – Campbell Global -Menasha
- Tour current logging operations; methane energy drill sites; Swiss needle cast infection areas; Sitka spruce plantings with tip weevil damage; alder plantations; and plantings from the late 1950s, early 1970s, and present that are adjacent to urban areas, residences, and highways.
- Examine fish passage culverts and instream work for spawning habitat on small streams; view coal mining areas from the 1870s through the 1940s; tour a 115-year-old stand of Douglas-fir with evidence of fire scars and logging from around 1900; hear about the history of logging in the stand during the past 25 years and the subsequent establishment of new stands of Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce, and some coastal redwood.

Professional ($335 early-bird) and student ($168 early-bird) registration fee includes attendance at the full meeting, refreshments, icebreaker, both breakfasts, Awards Banquet, one of two Thursday technical tours, and the barge tour of Coos Bay on Friday afternoon [150 person limit] (all tours include transportation, lunch, and beverages). All in all it’s a bargain! A full array of options is available for spouses/guests.
The early-bird deadline has been extended to April 15. After this date, an additional fee is assessed. Purchase orders, VISA/MasterCard accepted. Cancellations
Cancellations received by April 15 are subject to a 15% service charge. Cancellations received after April 15 will be charged the entire registration fee, but substitutions are always welcome.
Field Trips
Transportation is provided for all tours. All technical field trips will require some walking on uneven terrain. Wear appropriate closed-toe shoes or boots, and bring rain gear and a jacket. Tour availability will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign-up early to assure a spot on the tour of your choice.
The Friday barge tour is available to all registrants, but is capped at 150 people. Meet in the front of the Mill Casino Hotel Lobby at 12:30 pm. Participants will be bused to the loading zone. The tour returns at 3:00 pm and participants will be bused back to the hotel. Lunch and beverages are provided.
Spouse/Guest Tours
The spouse/guest tours are in the planning stages. Our goals are to offer our guests a portrait of the ecology, history, culture, and economics (shopping opportunities) of Oregon’s South Coast. Several tentative stops include Shore Acres State Park, Coos Bay Art Center, Coos History Museum, Old Town Bandon, and other unique gift shops. As your hosts on the South Coast we will build in as much tour flexibility as possible, so we may do what the majority of the group would like to do or see. Space is limited so please register soon. Tours are available Wednesday and Thursday. We guarantee that you will have an interesting and memory making two days. Any entrance fees to attractions and transportation is provided. Lunch is not included.

Three levels of sponsorship are available and all include recognition at the meeting and a varying number of free registrations dependent on total sponsor commitment. A block of rooms for the annual meeting has been reserved at the Mill Casino Hotel – please contact them at 800-953-4800 to make your reservation directly and mention OSAF. The room rate is $95 plus tax and reservations need to be made prior to April 4. The group rate will not be honored with online booking.
Limited government per diem rates are available for government employees. The Mill Casino Hotel is the recipient of TripAdvisor’s 2015 Certificate of Excellence Award. The facility also has an RV park available to Annual Meeting attendees. RV Park rates are $25-$30 per night.
By attending this meeting participants will be eligible for 15.5 Category 1 CFE credits by the Society of American Foresters.
