Foresters and other natural-resource professionals have a responsibility to understand how and why our climate is changing and how it is affecting our forests, fish, and wildlife — and to explain it to a public that knows little more about climate change than what they read in the news and on social media. This presentation offers some key facts as well as some misconceptions about climate change globally, in the US, and locally. After this presentation, you’ll be able to answer questions such as, “What are the main anthropogenic causes of the warming? How much of the Earth’s atmosphere is carbon dioxide? And of the several “greenhouse gases” (GHGs), which is responsible for the most warming? (the answer may surprise you)”. We’ll also look at some current forest conditions that are assumed to be caused by climate change, but that are influenced by other significant factors.
Our March speaker, Steve Wilent, will present an illuminating presentation about climate change and why the topic is important to foresters. Steve Wilent served as Editor of SAF The Forestry Source from 2004 to June 2021. He has been a part-time forestry instructor at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC), in Gresham, Oregon since 1996.
