Addressing Assisted Migration in Research and Practice: A Rooted in Research Webinar Series — Integrating Assisted Migration in National Forest Planning

November 6 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am PST

Integrating Assisted Migration in National Forest Planning
The Superior National Forest recently incorporated assisted migration into its forest plan. In this panel discussion, we will hear from a climate adaptation specialist, a silviculturist, a tribal forester, and a researcher who were all involved in planning and implementing assisted migration in this context.
Presenters:
  • Katie Frerker, Eastern Region
  • Brian Palik, Northern Research Station
  • Matt Tyler Petz Giguere, Grand Portage Tribal Forestry Department
  • Kyle Stover, Superior National Forest

As the climate changes, some trees may no longer thrive and regenerate in their current locations, which in turn may reduce the ecosystem goods and services they produce. Assisted migration is emerging as promising strategy to maintain forests in the future. Assisted migration is complex and involves many factors, including tree seed sourcing, field conditions, and cultural values.

Addressing Assisted Migration in Research and Practice is a four-part webinar series, hosted by NRS, NIACS and the USDA Northeast and Northern Forests Climate Hubs, that explores the research, planning, and implementation of assisted migration.

Presentations and panel discussions by scientists and natural resource professionals will share recent assisted migration research while showcasing success stories and confronting challenges of this innovative forest management practice. Webinars will consist of presentations or panel discussions followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
