AKSAF Speaker Series – Alaska Local Use Lumber Program

January 16 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm PST

Alaska imports most of its dimensional lumber from the lower 48 and Canada. Lumber markets have been volatile in recent years and in 2022 wood prices, on average, increased the price of a single-family home by $36,000. The volatility of the market mixed with recent supply chain issues have made home construction difficult in Alaska particularly off the road system. During the 2023 legislative session the Alaska lumber grading bill was passed directing the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection to develop a grading and training program to assist in providing locally sourced materials for residential home construction. This presentation will discuss why the program exists and how the program is being developed. This program was also featured in the fall 2023 issue of the Western Forester

This presentation will be held via Zoom and has been approved for 1 CFE credit.

Jeremy Douse is the Deputy Director and Division Operations Manager of the Alaska Division of Forestry and Fire Protection.  Jeremy has been practicing forestry in Alaska since 2002 and lives in Fairbanks.
