Portland SAF Chapter Meeting: Forest Products Innovation – What’s the latest and what’s on the horizon

October 17, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm PDT

Getting the most out of every log. That saying has long been the mantra of the forest products industry. Given high log costs and low sales margins on lumber, much of the past innovation in the industry has been driven by the need to maximize recovery. And of course, those pressures have not gone away. However, there are some new issues and trends driving innovation in the forest industry; as a result, the industry is responding in new ways. This presentation will highlight the issues and trends driving innovation in forest products and highlight several examples of current process and product innovations, as well as speculate on what the future may hold.

Scott Leavengood is Director of the Oregon Wood Innovation Center at Oregon State University. The center is a joint initiative of OSU’s College of Forestry and the OSU Extension Service. Scott has been with OSU since 1994. His primary job duties are related to industrial outreach which includes providing technical assistance to wood products firms and assisting entrepreneurs. He also teaches a course on advanced manufacturing. Scott has a B.S. in Wood Science from Colorado State University, M.S. from OSU, and a Ph.D. in Engineering Management from Portland State University.
