Climate change and associated drought, forest health and wildland fire risks are emerging as an existential threat to Oregon’s forests, and therefore a challenge to our profession and how we educate the next generation of foresters and natural resources professionals. Dr. Bailey will present recent published information on the potential for both climate mitigation and climate adaptation, which is a wonderful win-win for active forest management. Tree/forest survival is a key component to long-term carbon storage and climate mitigation, as well as sustaining forest resources and economies in general. Increased survival is easily and consistently achieved with proactive fuels management in our forests. The challenge is to recognize the emerging threat, break out of the dominant preservation mindset, and get this work done.
