SER Webinar | Braiding Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science for Ecocultural Restoration

November 14 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm PST

Description: Two-Eyed Seeing braids Indigenous Knowledge (IK) with Western Science to address the natural resource and conservation problems we face today in a rapidly warming world. Grasslands and forests are invaluable carbon sinks and sources of traditional plants and foods for humanity that are at high risk due to climate change impacts. In this webinar, Dr. Eisenberg will share her work with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Native Plant Conservation and Restoration (NPCR) Seeds of Success (SOS) Program in ecocultural restoration on two projects.

The Fort Belknap Indian Community, Oregon State University (OSU) College of Forestry (CoF) SOS Grassland Restoration Project is a long-term effort to restore native plants on the Northern Great Plains, where bison have been repatriated. This project aims to restore prairie ecosystems for wildlife and humans, using a Two-Eyed Seeing cross-cultural partnership model. This means empowering Tribal Nations to restore their lands, working with the US federal government and other partners to co-steward public lands with IK.

Dr. Eisenberg will also discuss the BLM NPCR Pacific Northwest Tribal Conservation Corps Pilot Project for SOS, in which she and her colleagues partner with Tribal Nations to restore climate resilience to western Oregon forests. She will describe the Tribal Youth Community Conservation Fellows programs intrinsic to these two projects, which provide STEM education and employment for members of the Tribal Nations, using Two-Eyed Seeing as a powerful intercultural climate resiliency tool. She will describe best practices for partnering with Tribal Nations in creating ecocultural restoration plans.

Learn about ecocultural restoration, its role in increasing ecological resilience of forests and grasslands to climate change, the integration of Indigenous Knowledge with Western Science, and how to partner respectfully with Tribal Nations in these efforts..
